Martin Luther King Day

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. Dr. King died well before I became aware of the Civil Rights movement. Having grown up in a lower middle class suburb, our family was not exactly supporters of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. King and the leaders of that movement definitely exposed the need for the country to radically change the treatment of minorities in every segment of society. I was able to see those changes begin to create meaningful change in our society.

I am concerned that the purpose of this day, to celebrate a seminal figure in our country’s history, is being used to promote such a blatant political agenda, Voting Rights. I am concerned that both the left and the right continue to exploit so much of our shared history to promote their political agenda’s. It is sorely disappointing to see this happen time and again. This continued pattern will do nothing to repair the divisions in our country. Let’s try to celebrate Dr. King’s incredible legacy on this day that we honor his memory.

I am a big Baltimore Ravens fans. Obviously, like all Ravens fans I was disappointed with the results of yesterday’s game. What a brutal way to end what started out as a very promising season. I was watching at a bar with a whole contingent of Steelers fans. You would have thought they had just won the Super Bowl. Good luck to them. They will need it. Can’t wait until next year when they will not have Big Ben and we have our full team back. Remember Steelers fans, the Ravens team you beat yesterday was made up of about 10 practice squad players. It was bittersweet in terms of watching Big Ben play his last game in Baltimore. Have a lot of respect for him as a player. Saw many of the games in Baltimore and it was always fun to watch him go up against Ray, Ed, Terrell Suggs and the rest of the Ravens greats.

We are very lucky to have picked a great community to retire to and make our home. Like much of Florida right now, the island is experiencing explosive growth but so far the community has maintained its small town culture that was what first attracted us to buy here 20 years ago and to retire here 5 years ago. We are anxious to see what happens over the next 5-10 years. I’m sure it will be exciting.
